Film: 30 Movies in 30 Days: Day 03

This post is part of a month-long project, answering thirty topics about movies over thirty days. The subject for the fourth day is:

A movie that makes you really happy

This is something that gave me a little trouble as nothing sprang immediately to mind. My Neighbour Totoro was the first thing I eventually thought of as it’s sweet and lovely, but then I was reminded of a film that is unquestionably the right choice:

Though I had little doubt that this was the right film it had been a while since I’d seen it, but upon going back to it again it was clear even within the first ten minutes that Amélie was the only real candidate. It’s a wonderful film that would surely warm the coldest of hearts. In fact, you can watch the opening ten minutes on YouTube (in poor enough quality that it’s no way to watch the film for real), which should be more than enough to convince anyone to go out and buy or rent the DVD:

The central character, Amélie, played perfectly by Audrey Tatou, has a tough childhood of loneliness and is deprived of genuine displays of affection from her parents, forcing her to rely on her imagination to get through the day. As an adult she discovers a child’s toy box in her apartment that had been hidden there decades ago by a previous tenant, and sets out to reunite the box with its owner. Upon witnessing the joy it brings him Amélie decides to become a do-gooder, subtly helping people to get what they want without them realising she’s doing it, all the while being too scared to go after what she wants for herself.

The film is just marvellous, full of excellent characters and with a lovely visual style and is a real treat to watch.
