Film: 30 Movies in 30 Days: Day 05

This post is part of a month-long project answering thirty topics about movies over thirty days. The subject for the fifth day is:

Favourite love story in a movie

This is another one that I really had to think on. I’m not much for conventional romance films and didn’t particularly warm to Love, Actually or films like that. For this I considered the teenage awakening of Jane after meeting Ricky in American Beauty or the broken, bitter relationship of Joel and Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but ultimately settled on:

The Fountain

As with Sunshine (from Day 2), The Fountain wasn’t a success, going through multiple cast changes (I couldn’t imagine the film working with original choices Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) and budget cuts, and the central love story is a complicated one. The film takes place across three distinct settings, with Tomas the conquistador questing for the Tree of Life for Queen Isabel of Spain in the 16th century, Tommy the oncologist trying to cure the brain cancer his wife Izzi is dying from, and Tom the spaceman monk travelling through space with his tree to a distant nebula on a quest for rebirth, with each version of the Tommy and Izzi characters played by Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.

In each instance it’s the Tommy variant who is the focus, his love for the Izzy variant and fear/hatred of death driving each story forward as he pursues the three separate quests, and by the end of the film the reason for that focus is clear as the connection between each story is revealed. I find The Fountain to be a wonderful film and the love between Tommy and Izzi makes it one of my favourite love stories in a movie.
