Film – Quick Thoughts: Audition

Audition
Audition, directed by Takashi Miike
Written by: Daisuke Tengan
Starring: Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina & Tetsu Sawaki
My rating: 4 of 5

I’d heard a lot of good things about this film, but it seems I’ve mixed up the plot of this with another one (probably Battle Royale), as I was expecting it to be about two women fighting to the death but this was about something else entirely, a man staging a fake film audition to find love and instead being targeted by a crazy woman who sees through his plan and habitually punishes people for taking advantage of women.

As you can see from the image there’s a big focus on Eihi, the poster and DVD cover showing her with various instruments of torture, but though it’s probably the defining moment of the film (and is incredibly graphic, not pleasant to watch at all) in terms of screen time it’s not that big a part of the film, and it’s certainly not a ‘torture porn’ movie like a Saw or Hostel. Most of the time it’s about Ryo trying to find somebody who can fill the gap left by the loss of his wife, making some bad decisions along the way and, when he thinks he’s found that woman, trying to keep her in his life, seizing upon everything he remembers her telling him to try and track her down. It’s a very good film.
