Film – Quick Thoughts: Hobo With a Shotgun

Sucker Punch
Hobo With a Shotgun, directed by Jason Eisener
Written by: John Davies, Jason Eisener & Rob Cotterill
Starring: Rutger Hauer & Molly Dunsworth
My rating: 3 of 5

I don’t think anybody could go into the film not having a good idea of what it’s going to be like, even if they haven’t seen the fake trailer that was sometimes shown with the two Grindhouse films. The title explains everything you could possibly need to know going in, serving as a plot synopsis and indicator of what kind of film it’s aiming to be, a classic exploitation flick destined for cult status.

Rutger Hauer is the titular hobo who arrives in a town that’s utterly fallen apart, controlled by criminals who can kill the citizens at their leisure (the entire police force having been corrupted). He decides he can’t let it slide, grabs a shotgun and starts killing all of the bad guys. It sets a low bar for itself and straddles it with ease. It’s cheap, it’s violent, it’s crude and it’s a lot of fun. As with The Machine Girl it’s just a fun diversion, though I liked this one a little more.
