Personal: A Brief Note

November 8, 2011 Leave a comment

I realise my The Daily Creed series came to an abrupt halt, as did blog activity for a couple of weeks. There are two reasons for that. The first is called Batman: Arkham City, a game that’s so good that it killed all enthusiasm I had for Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, especially when it finds ways around problems that I’ve already said have disappointed me in Ubisoft’s game. Right now it’s by far and away my favourite game of the year, I’ve already completed it twice and am now on a third playthrough. I’ll get back to The Daily Creed, it’ll just take a little while.

Personal: Polish in Strange Places

I’ve mentioned before that I’m learning Polish, the place I work at having a significantly greater proportion of Polish employees than it does English. Presumably it’s because I’ve mentioned Polish before that a spam bot recently tried to dump some links onto the blog, even if neither of the posts it commented on (Lady Vengeance and June 2011’s films) mentioned Polish at all. Because of my basic Polish education it meant I was able to identify some words in the links:

Reading: Discworld and Polish

Two places, one of them fictional. What's the connection?

(Click here for the Discworld source image and here for the Eastern European one)

At the place where I work there are lots of people from eastern Europe, particularly from those countries who became members of the European Union in 2004 like Poland, Lithuania and Hungary. In fact Brits like myself are by far the minority, giving the place an international feel that I rather like, enabling me to interact with people who have uprooted themselves across distances further than I’ve ever travelled.

Generally they speak English very well, especially in comparison to my ability to speak a second language – a school trip to France quickly robbed me of the notion that I was anywhere close to fluent in French – but I thought it wouldn’t hurt if I learned a few of the basics. It doesn’t really take much to convince me to embark on projects like this anyway as I like learning new things, and in terms of usefulness and the availability of learning materials Polish seemed the best choice.

Film: 2010’s Films By Month

January 13, 2011 4 comments

This is the fourth of a series of posts looking back at my entertainment consumption over 2010. I’ve already posted about 2010′s gaming backlog, the games I played, what games I played each month, what games I finished and what films I watched, and still to come are posts about the DVD backlog, the TV I watched and the books I read. There won’t be a game of the year post because that’s an ongoing project with a long way to go.

I didn't watch Avatar in 2009 but searching Google for a generic movie calendar was proving difficult (click the image for a link to the source).

This is the same list as yesterday’s but everything here is listed in the order I viewed them (and split by month), to get a better look at when I watched films and where there were any highs or lows in activity. After each monthly list I’ll share some thoughts on the month’s viewing. As I did yesterday I’ll be putting 2010 releases in bold and films I watched for the first time in italics:

I only went to the cinema four times this year, and only twice with 3D glasses. Click the image for a link to the source.

In 2010 I watched 131 films, 58 of which I’d not seen before (44%). In this post I’ll list them in alphabetical order, putting 2010 releases in bold and films I watched for the first time in italics, and a few comments will follow at the bottom:

Gaming: The 2010 Completed List

Though the backlog of unplayed games continues to grow I did play plenty of games this year and complete many of them. Here’s the list of games I finished, first listed by system:

Gaming: 2010’s Play Sessions

This was originally supposed to be at the end of yesterday’s post but there’s enough here that I felt it was worth pulling it out into its own entry.

Seeing as it’s data I have available I’m also going to list every game I played each month, showing what I played and how often. I don’t log the time played so a ten minute session with Peggle Nights isn’t counted any differently to six hours immersed in Mass Effect, but it’s still something I like seeing displayed. Everything will be sorted by number of play sessions, and after the list there will be some analysis of it all:
