Television: June 2011’s TV

July 28, 2011 2 comments

Almost a month late, we have the June round-up posts. This month started with games and now it’s time for a look at the month’s television:

Nobody seems to want to look forward this month.

TV: May 2011’s Television

Far later than intended, we have the May round-up posts, where I write a little about all the media I consumed throughout the month (June’s will hopefully go up next week, but haven’t been worked on at all yet). This month we start with the television I watched.

There are far fewer portraits this month but it's not because I watched much less television. Read on for the explanation.

Outside of this intro text and the above image everything was pretty much all written and ready to post by the 31st of May, so there was really no excuse for it not to go live on time. I’m doing things slightly different this month, commenting only on the shows that I feel I have something I want to talk about (and only doing images for those ones), so let’s get to it:

Television: April 2011’s TV

It’s time for each of April’s round-up posts, a quick overview and assessment of all the entertainment I consumed during the month. Having finally been on time enough last month to make goals this is the first proper opportunity to see whether I was able to meet them. This month kicked off with film, then it was books and then the month’s games, and we finish with April’s television.

Six new additions this month meant making this image wasn't any less time consuming.

Image sources: Doyle, The Host, Francis, Enoch, Brennan, Jonathan, Kitty, Rick, Alexei, The Doctor, Daenerys, House, Phil, Hope, Brian and Nicholas.

There are sixteen portraits in the image above (each representing a different season/series), compared to fourteen last month, twelve in February and just five in January. Despite that increase I did actually watch less television this month (which I’ll talk about in the goals section below), it just happened to cover more individual programmes. Let’s get to it:

Television: March 2011’s TV

On time for once (and coming straight on the heels of February’s), here we have the March round-up posts. This month we kicked off with the books I read, followed by the games I played. Next up is the TV I watched:

That's right, this time I needed to fit even more images into this little space, though thankfully the majority carried over from last month so I didn't have to find new sources.

Image sources: Doyle, Jed, Francis, Enoch, Brennan, Kitty, the Turok-Han, Rick, House, Phil, David, Hope, Brian and Albert.

New this month to the TV round-up are individual verdicts, helping me to judge whether I should keep watching. They’ll either be Good (will definitely stick with), Okay (which means I’m not fully enjoying it, which could result in it being dropped if that continues) and Bad (which will probably be where I do stop).

Some general spoilers will follow:

TV: February 2011’s Television

I’m still catching up with these, but unless procrastination gets the better of me March’s posts will arrive promptly in April once I’m off work (so probably the 6th onwards). This month the first monthly review post covered gaming (which was last  in January) and now it’s the turn of television, followed by film and ending with the month’s reading.

Finding suitable images for the ten new entries (both for their big image below and the smaller one above) was rather time-consuming. It will be easier when I'm able to re-use more of them.

Image sources: Jed, Mitchell, Francis, Enoch, Brennan, Kitty, the Turok-Han, House, Jack, Brian and Albert (Buffy is a capture from the DVD).

I watched more television this month thanks to two things. The first is simply that some programmes have returned from their seasonal break and I’ve jumped straight back in, and the second is thanks to Sky, our satellite TV provider. In February they relaunched their main TV channels, turning Sky1, Sky 2 and Sky3 into Sky1, Sky Living and Sky Atlantic. Sky 1 carries on pretty much as it has before, showing the biggest programmes and most of Sky’s original quiz, documentary and reality entertainment, Sky Living seems to be aiming a little more towards a female audience (which isn’t to say I’m writing it off as a girly channel or anything, but the branding and programme choice does seem to be aimed at a specific demographic) while Sky Atlantic is the new home for HBO programmes and things of a similar nature.

This relaunch meant there were quite a few new things premièring this month, and while in general I’m supposed to have sworn off new programmes (both because I have plenty to watch and because cancellation rates are so high right now) I did end up starting some new things, and nearly ended up watching The Sopranos again from the beginning and would have done so for Six Feet Under if I didn’t own the DVD box set. Here’s everything I did watch (there will be some general spoilers):

TV: January 2011’s Television

March 2, 2011 5 comments

I’ve decided to resurrect the old monthly review posts that I tried briefly last year (the earliest three entries with the monthly review tag), but doing them more in the style of the 2010 in review posts. Having only just decided to do it means I’m going to have to sort out January’s now then almost immediately jump into February’s, but going forward there should actually be a month between them. This first post covers television viewing, and there will also be posts for film, books and gaming.

Spike, Buffy, Raylan, Simon and Jack.

Making a top image out of every watched show may prove awkward in months when I watch more.

Image sources: Raylan, Simon and Jack (Spike and Buffy are DVD captures)

Being the first post in this style I’ll talk about when I watch TV in addition to what I watched. As I’ve mentioned previously on work days I only have about three hours of free time, and on those days I wake at 3pm, sit at my computer and watch an episode of something I have downloaded or on DVD, and while doing so I check into Twitter then scan Google Reader to whittle the hundreds of entries down into just the ones I want to properly read. On my days off I do the same (keeping to the same hours as a work day), but also have time to watch something on an online video service during the evening, then a couple of things at about midnight that have queued up on the Sky+ DVR.

With that in mind, here’s what I watched (with summaries that will include some spoilers), after which I’ll give my overall verdict on the month:
