Film: Origin – Spirits of the Past

For most of the film it seems like things would have been better if Agito had never done this.

In some ways Origin: Spirits of the Past almost functions as a counterpoint to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (which it isn’t connected to in any way). In the latter the sci-fi elements were almost incidental compared to the story of Makoto and her friends, her time travel putting a new spin on her life without it being the core of the film. In this film it’s all about the sci-fi.

Had I been gifted the ability to jump back in time as a teenager I don’t think things would have gone very well. The only thing that would have prevented me accidentally destroying the world would have been that I was spending all my time fixing what I perceived to be the wrongs in my life, all the little things that seemed important back then.

Reading: June 2011’s Books

July 29, 2011 1 comment

Almost a month late, we have the June round-up posts. Games and television were up first, now it’s time for the books:

Terry is the only returning author this month and is proving something of a regular, appearing in four of the last six months.

Image sources: Terry, Cormac, Markus and Brian

There are four authors this month but I read nearly twice that amount of books. As ever, that’s because of one specific author. Including this month’s haul I’ve read ten of his books so far this year and eighteen in the past twelve months. Let’s get to it then: Read more…

Gaming: June 2011’s Games

July 27, 2011 3 comments

It’s well past time for the June round-ups, and this month we start by looking at the games I played in June.

Four of this month's images come from Valve games.

Image sources: Nick, some creepers, a turret, Wheatley and a Mii. The combine is from a personal screenshot.

Another low-key month for gaming then. Let’s get to it:

Film: May 2011’s Films

Far later than intended, we have the May round-up posts, where I write a little about all the media I consumed throughout the month (June’s will hopefully go up next week, but haven’t been worked on at all yet). This month started with television and now we’re looking at the films I watched.

Yep, there are actually people here this month.

Image sources: Orange, Dignam, Farquaad, Charlie, Harry, Liam, Rita, Lionel, Cecilia, Valeri and John.

I watched films this month, hooray! In April I managed to not watch any films at all, so this a step up. I decided that on my days off I could watch a film in place of my morning TV episode, seeing as time’s not as much of a factor as it is on a work day. Not necessarily every day as I don’t have quite that many unwatched films, but it’s still a good time for me to watch a film if I have one. I’ve also made the effort to update the draft of this post every time I watch a film rather than try to assemble it all from memory at the end of the month, and this new way worked much better. Here’s what I watched:

Film: March 2011’s Films

Here we have the last of the March round-up posts. This month we kicked off with the books I read, followed by the games I played and the TV I watched. Now it’s time for the films I viewed.

As ever, watching so few films does mean that making the title image is pretty darn simple.

Image sources: Ponyo, Shaun, Ben, Partridge and V.

Five films then, two more than February’s meagre haul but two less than January’s, which was already a little on the low side. Oh well, here’s what they were:

Gaming: March 2011’s Games

April 15, 2011 2 comments

On time for once (and coming straight on the heels of February’s), here we have the March round-up posts. This month we kicked off with the books I read and now it’s time for the games I played:

Squashing twelve separate images into a 425x90 image is kind of difficult. Its also incredibly time-consuming, comprable to the amount of time it takes to write the entire post. In fact I spend a fairly ridiculous amount of time assembling the images for each blog post.

Images sources: Conan, Donkey Kong, Benny, Trip, Kane, a wizard, Liu Kang, Tommy, Nathan, Randy and Father Mother.

I think I’ve got am okay system in place now for gaming, but I’ll cover that in the goals section at the bottom of this post. Let’s get straight to the gaming then:
