Gaming: May 2011’s Games

Far later than intended, we have the May round-up posts, where I write a little about all the media I consumed throughout the month (June’s will hopefully go up next week, but haven’t been worked on at all yet). I’ve already published the posts for television, film and books, so we finish the set with the month’s gaming.

I like to include a comment for these portraits but don't really have anything to say beyond saying that I have nothing to say.

The absence of certain games in the above image – Dragon Age: Origins and at least one out of Fallout 3, The Sims 3 or Left 4 Dead 2 – should be an indicator that I’m still not back into the routine I devised at the end of March, even though I played slightly more games than I did in April. That means I’ve still only managed it for one week in the past two a bit months, and haven’t actually done it for a single week since I decided to do so, which is daft. Oh well, onto the round-up:

Gaming: Enslaved – Free

Seeing as this is the last post I'll make about the game I figured I'd go for one more new picture. I chose Pigsy because ultimately I really did like the character.

That’s it then, game complete. 530 gamerscore. Game over. One and a bit levels, one boss fight and lots and lots and lots of cutscenes.

Gaming: Enslaved – That’ll do, Pig

It's impressive how neutered the above enemy has become, starting off as an instant-kill terror you have to flee from but by this point being something you can kill with the press of one button. As I've mentioned before, it means replaying earlier chapters will make the danger feel false.

I’ve had plenty of negative things to say about Ninja Theory’s to approach to freedom and storytelling, and I maybe haven’t said enough about what I’m enjoying about the game. Today I was struck again by how colourful the game is. Some of the chapters take place in industrial locations that in other games are used as opportunities for the developers to really embrace grey and brown, but in Enslaved there’s colour everywhere. If there’s one thing other developers should copy from Enslaved, it’s how to inject colour into a setting without making it look like a cartoon.

We're back!

That’s right, I finally tore myself away from Minecraft and spent some time on Enslaved again. The game welcomed me back with an… on-rails turret section. Oh well.

Gaming: April 2011’s Games

It’s time for each of April’s round-up posts, a quick overview and assessment of all the entertainment I consumed during the month. Having finally been on time enough last month to make goals this is the first proper opportunity to see whether I was able to meet them. This month kicked off with film, then books, and now it’s time for April’s games.

In fact, this is probably the easiest gaming round-up I’ll ever have to make for the blog, short of a theoretical month where I don’t actually play any games. Gaming: March 2011’s Games

On time for once (and coming straight on the heels of February’s), here we have the March round-up posts. This month we kicked off with the books I read and now it’s time for the games I played:

Squashing twelve separate images into a 425x90 image is kind of difficult. Its also incredibly time-consuming, comprable to the amount of time it takes to write the entire post. In fact I spend a fairly ridiculous amount of time assembling the images for each blog post.

Gaming: Enslaved – Uncontrollable

Okay, today I felt like making a new image. I can't help wondering what kind of mindset would lead to people mass producing mechs that look like the one pictured.

I’m liking Enslaved but I have to admit that the sheer amount of times Ninja Theory take control away from the player is starting to get to me. It’s incessant and unnecessary, with plenty of points where it would work better with the player still involved or simply skipping them altogether. I’m going to include a few examples below, without spoilers:
