Gaming: January 2011’s Games

When I needed a small character image for Dead Rising 2 there was really only one choice.

I think I’m still trying to find a decent for rhythm for when I play games. I’d still say I don’t have time on work days and am happy with how I make use of those few hours of free time, but I think the days I’m off work still need some adjustment. As it stands gaming is how I finish off the day, which means if one or more of the things that precede it take up more time than they should then I play less, and a lot of the time I won’t start playing anything until two or three hours before bed. That still means completing an average eight-ten hour game in a few nights but is far removed from the time I used to spend gaming (and which I’d like to again).

It’s something I’m still thinking on, so here’s what I managed to play in January:

Reading: January 2011’s Books

March 9, 2011 3 comments

There are only two different authors for this month, but more than two books.

(Image sources: Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman)

As with the previous two posts I’ll use this space to explain when it is I read. On my four days off I read the way I always have throughout my life, in bed before I go to sleep. Currently I’ll read for about an hour from about 7am to 8am (I keep to work hours even on my days off as switching back and forth every four days is awkward).

On work days I don’t get home until about 8am and only have about three hours of free time each day so a dedicated reading session isn’t workable. However, on the way home I often take the train (I live just about within walking distance but I don’t always feel like walking for an hour after already working for the previous twelve) and have to wait for about twenty minutes at the station. Having a book with me also means I can read at break times if I’m there at an irregular time and aren’t with anybody else (which happens often). Sometimes there are work days when I read more than I do on off days.

Film: January 2011’s Films

March 3, 2011 3 comments

I’ve decided to resurrect the old monthly review posts that I tried briefly last year (the earliest three entries with the monthly review tag), but doing them more in the style of the 2010 in review posts. Having only just decided to do it means I’m going to have to sort out January’s now then almost immediately jump into February’s, but going forward there should actually be a month between them. This second post covers film viewing, and there will also be posts for television , books and gaming.

Fitting in all seven was a bit of a squeeze.

As with the television post I’ll use this opening paragraph to discuss when I watch films. With just three hours of free time on a work day (during which I also have to get ready) it’s not particularly practical to watch a film as most push two hours in length and would just consume the majority of available time. I like the routine of getting out of bed and watching an episode of a TV programme so I don’t particularly want to shunt that aside for a film anyway. That leaves my four days off, which is a pretty substantial amount of time during which it should be easy to find time to watch a couple of films each ‘week’.

After looking back at the entirety of 2010’s film viewing it emerged that starting work resulted in the time I set aside for films dropping down to ridiculous levels, with just eight films watched in the last four months of the year, and I declared that I needed to make more of an effort to find time for films. So let’s see how I did (this post won’t contain any spoilers):

TV: January 2011’s Television

I’ve decided to resurrect the old monthly review posts that I tried briefly last year (the earliest three entries with the monthly review tag), but doing them more in the style of the 2010 in review posts. Having only just decided to do it means I’m going to have to sort out January’s now then almost immediately jump into February’s, but going forward there should actually be a month between them. This first post covers television viewing, and there will also be posts for film, books and gaming.

Spike, Buffy, Raylan, Simon and Jack.

Making a top image out of every watched show may prove awkward in months when I watch more.

Being the first post in this style I’ll talk about when I watch TV in addition to what I watched. As I’ve mentioned previously on work days I only have about three hours of free time, and on those days I wake at 3pm, sit at my computer and watch an episode of something I have downloaded or on DVD, and while doing so I check into Twitter then scan Google Reader to whittle the hundreds of entries down into just the ones I want to properly read. On my days off I do the same (keeping to the same hours as a work day), but also have time to watch something on an online video service during the evening, then a couple of things at about midnight that have queued up on the Sky+ DVR.

With that in mind, here’s what I watched (with summaries that will include some spoilers), after which I’ll give my overall verdict on the month:

Personal: January 2010 in review

February 1, 2010 3 comments

I’m trying out something new for 2010, looking back on each month. The idea is to make it a monthly feature, but we’ll see if I stick with it across the year or if I can even make it interesting enough to be worth reading:
